At what point, exactly, does adventure racing become outright torture?
This weekend, more than 12,000 hard-core athletes will pay for the privilege of finding out. Teams from across the country will meet at the Hi Hat Ranch east of Sarasota for more than 10 miles of fiendish obstacle course challenges.
Tough Mudder events are famous — or infamous — for sending people scrambling over walls, under barbed wire and through icy troughs. Near the finish line, participants run a gantlet of live electrical wires.
