Selling Your Strengths

Maximize Your Resume

The actual words that appear in your resume are key when it comes to online applications.

The software utilized by companies to scan resumes has a list of words in the job description. It is looking at your resume to place a check. Look for words in the job description to include in your experience summary or work history. Think of it as matching your skills to their request.

Don’t be tempted to lie or exaggerate your experience just to match a job posting. But use the job posting to think through what you actually do in your job (or previous jobs) that fits the desired candidate.

The sample below shows an actual job posting for an electronics retail store on the Employ Florida network. (Click the sample to enlarge it.) The lower left is a standard resume work history; the lower right shows how that same work history maximized with key words to match the job posting.
