Urban theorist Richard Florida named Gainesville one of the top areas in the nation for 2012 college graduates in an analysis based on unemployment rate, professional/tech/creative jobs, salary levels, housing costs, commuting and population of single adults. The top 10:

  1. San Francisco Bay area
  2. Silicon Valley
  3. New York/Newark, N.J./Edison, Pa.
  4. Champaign-Urbana, Ill.
  5. Durham, N.C.
  6. Gainesville
  7. Ithaca, N.Y.
  8. Ann Arbor, Mich.
  9. Trenton-Ewing, N.J.
  10. Boston/Cambridge, Mass./Quincy, N.H.
