Jan Verhagen got the idea for Fitness Proaction while working at a gym two years ago. "I asked myself, ‘with a degree on the wall at home, why am I doing this?' " Today, her Tallahassee fitness center fills a niche market where professional clients can receive individual attention in a private setting. "Our motto: Self-care over healthcare." This year, business is rising. She has added two part-time trainers. Verhagen says she leaned on the Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Development Center workshops, Microsoft and Quickbooks courses and networking during startup.
