Herald Publisher Steps Down
Jes?s D?az, publisher of the Miami Herald and Nuevo Herald, resigned last month. D?az fired two Nuevo Herald writers after it was discovered they had been paid thousands of dollars for work on behalf of Radio Marti and TV Marti, broadcasts sponsored by the U.S. government. The firings ignited outrage among some in the Cuban- American community, who threatened an advertising boycott and bombarded the paper with letters and e-mails. D?az then granted the two writers amnesty, offered to rehire them and resigned, saying, "The events of the past three weeks have created an environment that no longer allows me to lead our newspapers in a manner most beneficial for our newspapers, our readers and our community.'' General manager David Landsberg replaces D?az.
