Feds Set Contract Record; Still Short of Small-Business Goal
How's the government doing at awarding contracts to small companies? More than half of federal agencies met their small-business goals in fiscal 2008, which ended last Sept. 30, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration's small-business procurement scorecard. Overall, the federal government doled out a record amount to small businesses — more than $93 billion, or 21.5% of all contracts awarded. Still, that fell short of the 23% target set by law. The SBA scorecard rates 24 agencies on their overall small-business goals and on contracting goals for four types of small businesses, including companies owned by women or service-disabled veterans.
