CEO's New Year's Resolutions

We asked three of Florida's top business leaders about their New Year's resolutions, past and present.

Pounding the Pavement

 Steve Odland
Chairman/CEO, Office Depot
Delray Beach

Steve Odland has been running the second-largest office supply company in the country for three years.

» Resolution 2009: “Stop being stressed about things I cannot control, like the economy. Spend more time with my children.
Run a marathon.”

» Bucket list: Start a charitable foundation. “I want to create a vehicle that will live on beyond me to give back to the community.”

Tickling the Ivories

 Kathryn “Katie” Pemble
President/CEO, Florida Bank
Tampa

Florida native Katie Pemble comes from a Gator family. She’s lived practically all over the state but now calls St. Petersburg home. Pemble took the reins of Florida Bank (assets of $533 million) — formerly Bank of St. Petersburg — in October 2007.

Resolution 2009: Learn to play the piano. “My 9-year-old daughter asked me to take lessons with her. We’ll be playing on a piano that’s been in my family for 35 years.”

Best resolution ever kept: “I hope it’s this one.”

Bucket list: “I have never traveled to Europe, so I’d like to one day be able to afford to spend a summer with my family living in Tuscany.”

Making Connections

 Rhea F. Law
CEO/chairwoman, Fowler White Boggs
Tampa

One of Florida’s most powerful attorneys, Rhea Law is known for her sense of adventure, including auto and motorcycle racing.

Resolution 2009: “In light of the current economic climate and the negative impacts on our business clients, this year I will put increased emphasis on providing contacts and facilitating relationships to grow our business base. If every business person were to complete just one such connection, we could collectively accomplish our own bailout!”

Best resolution ever kept: To fly an F-16. “What a ride! Even today, I smile just thinking about it. Another accomplished resolution was to ‘give back’ to the University of South Florida. As a former employee and graduate, I owe the university for the education and encouragement which has allowed me to be successful in my business career.”

Bucket list: “Space Shuttle?”
