Florida Transportation: Moving Ahead

PortMiami, Miami Airport, Signature Bridge

| 4/27/2020

In 2018, Royal Caribbean Cruises opened a $266-million passenger terminal at PortMiami. Since then, four other cruise companies have embarked on their own PortMiami terminal developments, generating more than $1 billion in construction activity.

Miami International Airport says its annual passenger numbers will increase significantly during the next two decades — from 45 million in 2018 to 77 million in 2040. To accommodate that growth, the airport is pursuing up to $5 billion in projects, including a redevelopment of several concourses in the central and south terminals, an overhaul of gates to handle larger planes, two new hotels and more warehouses for cargo operations.

The state Department of Transportation has begun an $802-million project in downtown Miami to reduce traffic congestion at Dolphin Expressway and I-95 to the MacArthur Causeway.
